ECO attended the 6th Asian Ministerial  Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangkok

The Sixth Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction was held on 22-26 June 2014 in Bangkok. The Conference was hosted by the Royal Thai Government in collaboration with UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR). Participants from local and national Governments; regional intergovernmental organizations including ASEAN, SAARC and ECO; United Nations bodies; NGOs and civil society organizations; private sector; scientific and academic community and media attended this event. The main theme of the Conference was “Promoting Investments for Resilient Nations and Communities” which also focused on the regional preparation for the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction scheduled for 14-18 March 2015 in Sendai, Japan. The Japan Conference is expected to evaluate implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 and adopt a new post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.

The participation of the ECO Secretariat in the Conference was meant to present ECO as an intergovernmental organization directly related to the disaster management and reduction and to ensure that disasters-related issues of the ECO Region will be properly addressed in any Asian initiative/process leading to the 3rd World Conference in 2015. Representative of the ECO Secretariat also met with UN bodies and some international and regional organizations where the need for enhanced cooperation with ECO was discussed and necessary technical and financial support were sought.
